Metaphors

Sorry of the long delay in our last entry, but I wanted to share some exciting work that my students have been doing around metaphors.

We recently took our reading comprehension mid-year assessment, and the results showed that we needed to work on our understanding of figurative language.  Thus, we're exploring metaphors.

To begin the unit, we briefly discussed the definition of metaphor, and we looked at examples of metaphors for life.  We then made our own metaphors for life with illustrations.  Some examples follow.  (By the way, we would be interested in your metaphors for life.)







We then read some poems and discussed how the authors used metaphors to explain their ideas about the subjects to the audience.  Below are the poems and some illustrations explaining the metaphors.

Hope is the thing with feathers 
That perches in the soul, 
And sings the tune--without the words, 
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard; 
And sore must be the storm 
That could abash the little bird 
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land,

The Sea

The sea is a hungry dog,
Giant and grey.
He rolls on the beach all day.
With his clashing teeth and shaggy jaws

Hour upon hour he gnaws
The rumbling, tumbling stones,
And 'Bones, bones, bones, bones!'
The giant sea-dog moans,
Licking his greasy paws.

And the moon rocks in the stormy cloud,
He bounds to his feet and snuffs and sniffs,
Shaking his wet sides over the cliffs,
And howls and hollos long and loud.

Today

Today we had physical education.  We needed to move Skittles with straws and can not touch it,
and we had art with another class and in writing we wrote the personal background section of for the explorers that we are studing.

science


science: what we did in science was to watch a video of erosion and make observation
of what we saw.

Math: we solved problems with different expression and trying to get the same
answer.

writing: we talk with our partners and said what we should write next about the explorations of Ponce de Leon.

science

  • In science we did was we did an experiment because we were researching a question about where the safest place to build a home on a mountain.  We wanted to see if the water would erode the land away from the houses.
  • Then we went to the bathroom.
  • After that we went to Ms. Peterson's class and did writing about Juan Ponce de Leon.  While there we discussed if he was violent or non-violent toward the Native Indians in Puerto Rico.

BLACK OUT BULLYING

Yesterday we did black-out bullying it is about that this school is trying to be bully free becaues we are trying to stop bullying forever so nobody gets bullied again in school.

Computer and Reading

Today in computers we did:
  • reports on a country or city because we are working on report writing.
  • we also played Firstinmath for 15 minutes because we need to practice math so we can become better experts in math.
Today in reading we did:
  • independent reading because Mr.V was working with a group on their guided reading book. 
  • Me (Andrea) and Noelia worked with Mr.V for 15 minutes on our guided reading book (Louis Braille) and he taught us 2 column chart that we can use to make a response to a prompt correctly.

  • Today in science, we added things to the black-out bullying poster so peolpe can stop bullying.
  • In math, we talked about sets of problems to learn more about that.
  • In writing, we talked about de Leon.
